New Site

After a few years with my old website I have decided to move on...it's hard to do! However it was time, and I have my issues with the old one. I am still working out what I want the new one to be, have paintings to add, and may change a few things here and there...but it immediately alleviates some of the issues I had with the previous one, and gives me a lot more freedom to customize it as I please. Silent Witness (Experimental Series)

I did these little portraits a couple months ago, experimenting with some different approaches and techniques. I painted all of them simultaneously so that they would have some cohesion, and if something was going right I could carry that to the next one, if something was going wrong I did not have a lot of time and energy invested in any one as an individual. Each one is done on a little 8" x 8" board, I wanted to work pretty small and fairly quick to keep things fresh and spontaneous. Some are better than others, and a few effects came out kind of cool, others not so much...but I wanted to display all 15 in all their separate failure and success instead of editing down to the ones I like. It is really nice to step back and try something a bit different, it may not end up being your best or favorite piece, but what is learned in the process is so incredibly valuable.

They are currently at Gallery 903 in Portland.

Light & Leaf

I am really enjoying this guy's stuff recently, Brad Reuben Kunkle. Obviously the figures are very well painted, but beyond that the composition and design is amazing and he implements gold and silver leaf which I imagine in person is very stunning...also some great narrative happening which appeals to the illustrator in me. Definitely sensing some Gustav Klimt here. The examples here are pretty small, but if you visit his site you can zoom in and see them in detail.

One of the latest...just showed up at Wells Gallery in Charleston. Been a pretty busy year thus far, have about 3-4 other paintings I still need to post to the main site.

Houston Bound - Dean Day Gallery

As of this month I will now be showing at Dean Day Gallery in Houston, Texas. I am pretty excited about this, Houston being the 4th largest city in the US, and a lively art scene. Here is the gallery's little blurb from their site...

Charleston Style & Design

There's a nice little article about the Wells Gallery in the most recent copy of Charleston Style & Design Magazine (Winter 2011). It features my painting "Flight" alongside paintings by Glen Harrington, Karen Larson Turner, and a photograph by John Michiels.

Twas the Season...

I had a couple of commissions to do for Christmas, this one was my favorite. A friend of mine asked me to paint a portrait of his 2 year old little girl to give as a gift. I could not help but smile the entire time I was painting, it brought me a lot of joy...and simultaneously a lot of stress. With any portrait I put a lot of pressure on myself to get the likeness, it is terrifying thinking that you are painting an image of an individual, in some cases someone you have never met, FOR someone who obviously knows them very well!

From what I have heard it was very well received, what a relief!

Brandt-Roberts Galleries

I am excited to announce that I will now be showing at Brandt-Roberts Galleries in the Short North Arts District of Columbus, Ohio. This is a brand new gallery, they are having their grand opening tonight (Friday Oct. 29th) and will be open and rolling-right-along next week for the first Saturday Gallery Hop (Nov. 6th).

If you are in that area, stop by and have a look. I am told thousands of people converge on the Short North District for first Saturdays, evidently it is the place to be, lots of galleries, boutiques, and restaurants doing it up right.

I have two pcs. at the gallery right now, and a few smaller paintings headed there for a small works show next month.

Pike Takes 2nd
