MenuMasters - 2014
I had the pleasure of being commissioned again by Ventura Foods to do a painting and set of prints for the 2014 MenuMasters Awards Ceremonies held May 17th at the beautiful Drake Hotel in Chicago. The MenuMasters Awards Ceremonies recognize visionary and creative foodservice professionals in Research & Development, Culinary and Menu Development. Awards are given to those who enhance the value of foodservice to consumers with exciting, industry-building innovations and breakthrough ideas. More than 300 culinary professionals attend the MenuMasters Awards Ceremonies each May. The gala event is presented by Nation's Restaurant News and sponsored by Ventura Foods.
The entire weekend was phenomenal, the Ventura Foods and Nation’s Restaurant News teams work incredibly hard to put on an absolutely spectacular event. As you’d expect at a culinary awards event there’s an abundance of amazing food, wine, and great people. I had a wonderful time meeting and talking with hundreds of folks at the after party where I also personalized their prints. A couple of notable winners were this year's top "Chef/Innovator”, Michael Smith, and the Hall of Fame inductees, Mary Sue Milliken & Susan Feniger of the critically acclaimed Border Grill restaraunts in Southern California and Las Vegas. You may also recognize them from The Food Network’s “Too Hot Tamales” and Bravo’s “Top Chef Masters”.
A special thanks to Ventura Foods and Nation’s Restaurant News for the opportunity and experience. I am excited and proud to have been a part of this incredible event.
Here is an image of the commissioned painting, "Golden Hours". Attendees received a signed and numbered giclée print of the piece as a gift.

MenuMasters - 2013
I had the honor of being commissioned by Ventura Foods to do a painting and set of prints for the 2013 MenuMasters Awards Ceremonies held May 18th at the Drake Hotel in Chicago presented by Nations Restaurant News. The MenuMasters Awards Ceremonies recognize visionary and creative foodservice professionals in Research & Development, Culinary and Menu Development. Awards are given to those who enhance the value of foodservice to consumers with exciting, industry-building innovations and breakthrough ideas.
The event was an absolute blast. There was a lot of wonderful food, wine, and great people. I had the opportunity to meet and chat with hundreds of folks at the after party and personalize their prints which was a lot of fun. A few other highlights for me were getting to meet this years winner for "Chef/Innovator", Jonathon Sawyer, founder of The Greenhouse Tavern, who prepared a tasty "Duck Zampone", having the odd (but delightful) experience of eating a Taco Bell Doritos Locos Taco paired with a fine wine, and getting to be at the ceremony for the hall of fame induction of world renowned chef José Andrés of Think Food Group. Chef Andrés gave a compelling speech inspiring our food industry to be creative, and urging them to recognize their responsibility to feed people good, healthy, quality food. He summed it all up with a quote from Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin,
"The destiny of nations depends on the manner in which they feed themselves."
A special thanks to Ventura Foods for the opportunity and experience. They did such a great job putting on a very fun, exciting, and elegant event.

Southwest Art - "The Human Experience"

I am part of a figurative feature in the January 2012 issue of Southwest Art titled, "The Human Experience" which includes Michael Mao, Vincent Giarrano (cover), Cynthia Feustel, Ryan S. Brown, and Ignat Ignatov. Overall a pretty nice issue, there's a preview of The Coors Western Art Show, and a great feature with several prints of Carolyn Anderson's work (always amazing).

Uribe - On Originality
Good post, a struggle I have to imagine any artist (visual or not) deals with, especially in "formative years", starting out, and/or trying to find a voice.

New Site
After a few years with my old website I have decided to move on...it's hard to do! However it was time, and I have my issues with the old one. I am still working out what I want the new one to be, have paintings to add, and may change a few things here and there...but it immediately alleviates some of the issues I had with the previous one, and gives me a lot more freedom to customize it as I please. Check it out when you get a chance, the same url "MarkAndrewBailey.com" will get you there, or a newer, more search engine friendly one will as well, "BaileyPaintings.com".

Silent Witness (Experimental Series)

I did these little portraits a couple months ago, experimenting with some different approaches and techniques. I painted all of them simultaneously so that they would have some cohesion, and if something was going right I could carry that to the next one, if something was going wrong I did not have a lot of time and energy invested in any one as an individual. Each one is done on a little 8" x 8" board, I wanted to work pretty small and fairly quick to keep things fresh and spontaneous. Some are better than others, and a few effects came out kind of cool, others not so much...but I wanted to display all 15 in all their separate failure and success instead of editing down to the ones I like. It is really nice to step back and try something a bit different, it may not end up being your best or favorite piece, but what is learned in the process is so incredibly valuable.
They are currently at Gallery 903 in Portland.

Light & Leaf

I am really enjoying this guy's stuff recently, Brad Reuben Kunkle. Obviously the figures are very well painted, but beyond that the composition and design is amazing and he implements gold and silver leaf which I imagine in person is very stunning...also some great narrative happening which appeals to the illustrator in me. Definitely sensing some Gustav Klimt here. The examples here are pretty small, but if you visit his site you can zoom in and see them in detail.
