I painted all of them simultaneously so that they would have some cohesion, and if something was going right I could carry that to the next one, if something was going wrong I did not have a lot of time and energy invested in any one as an individual. Each one is done on a little 8" x 8" board, I wanted to work pretty small and fairly quick to keep things fresh and spontaneous. Some are better than others, and a few effects came out kind of cool, others not so much...but I wanted to display all 15 in all their separate failure and success instead of editing down to the ones I like. It is really nice to step back and try something a bit different, it may not end up being your best or favorite piece, but what is learned in the process is so incredibly valuable.

They are currently at Gallery 903 in Portland.

Light & Leaf

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 108px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4nlrFZndptI/Td6IXkv_xdI/AAAAAAAAAo8/tquNrhRM4Yw/s200/Kunkle4.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5611072124333573586" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qej840W41fo/Td6IXHFPqyI/AAAAAAAAAo0/EJR1O1K4DGM/s200/Kunkle3.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5611072116369632034" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 118px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Zl6NelnbFPE/Td6IW-Oa7-I/AAAAAAAAAos/iMgFjp759oc/s200/Kunkle2.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5611072113992200162" />
I am really enjoying this guy's stuff recently, Brad Reuben Kunkle. Obviously the figures are very well painted, but beyond that the composition and design is amazing and he implements gold and silver leaf which I imagine in person is very stunning...also some great narrative happening which appeals to the illustrator in me. Definitely sensing some Gustav Klimt here. The examples here are pretty small, but if you visit his site you can zoom in and see them in detail.

"In The Weeds"

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 159px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-IGdO37jORX8/TbX6uJQ3WGI/AAAAAAAAAoE/wNIZfAsHcn8/s200/Mark_Bailey_InTheWeeds_xsm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5599657382372661346" />
One of the latest...just showed up at Wells Gallery in Charleston. I am pretty excited about this, Houston being the 4th largest city in the US, and a lively art scene. Here is the gallery's little blurb from their site...

DEAN DAY GALLERY has provided art expertise & resources in assisting private collectors & design professionals in the acquisition of fine art since 1980. The gallery features contemporary, abstract & realist artwork that appeals to both the beginning & serious collector. Dean Day Gallery is centrally located on "Gallery Row" in the Upper Kirby District and is a member of the Houston Art Dealers Association.

Dean Day Gallery
2639 Colquitt
Houston, Texas 77098
713.520.1021
www.DeanDayGallery.com

SO, if you are in that area, stop by and say hello, my first work (3 paintings) will be in the gallery for their opening on March 26th.

Charleston Style & Design

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 84px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_kip94TFXvBs/TUBPemsWrzI/AAAAAAAAAno/NoRHNSC6TMs/s200/CharlestonStyleandDesign.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5566536526631186226" />
There's a nice little article about the Wells Gallery in the most recent copy of Charleston Style & Design Magazine (Winter 2011). A friend of mine asked me to paint a portrait of his 2 year old little girl to give as a gift. I am told thousands of people converge on the Short North District for first Saturdays, evidently it is the place to be, lots of galleries, boutiques, and restaurants doing it up right.

I have two pcs. at the gallery right now, and a few smaller paintings headed there for a small works show next month.

Brandt-Roberts Galleries
642 N High St
Columbus, Ohio 43215
614.223.1655
www.brandtrobertsgalleries.com
info@brandtrobertsgalleries.com

Pike Takes 2nd

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 160px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_kip94TFXvBs/TL3G2X8ZSMI/AAAAAAAAAm8/Oy5VzNTN7kc/s200/Mark_Bailey_Pike_sm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5529794554923403458" />
Pike was awarded 2nd place this month in the Bold Brush Painting Competition. These guys kind of blew the doors off American art at the time, bringing impressionism and/or loose brushwork into play. They all inspire me, and although it may or may not be apparent, they likely have, and will have, some influence on my work...you never know what slips in.

On a side-note, subtly related...in that they were a major part of art in the midwest...and to a degree Ohio...I will soon be showing in Ohio...Columbus...the Short North District...more on that to come. The newly remodeled space looks great, and it was awesome to see a LOT of traffic there at the opening which coincided nicely with Portland's "First Thursday" event.

Here is the link to Gallery 903

Diebenkorn, Westmark, Evans

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 193px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_kip94TFXvBs/THgE8ihjF-I/AAAAAAAAAlk/8Cn2cRU3TKQ/s200/Fieldsbytheriver.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5510159582193981410" />
I really liked this past statement I came across by John Westmark.

(John is featured on ArtistADay today)

"Since 1999, my work has been predominately influenced by Diebenkorn, and to a lesser extent, Matisse. I agree with their approach of moving beyond the initial architecture of a painting by concealing and correcting previous marks, with the goal of maintaining a stance of unself-consciousness and rightness. I believe that the relationship between the unconscious, spontaneous reaction and the premeditated, intentional mark is the key to a successful painting. Developing the intuition to know when, and when not to rework, is paramount. Ultimately it is this dichotomy that creates the painting - a collection of brush strokes and marks that reflects the energy and spirit of the artist at the time of its creation.

My subject matter is derived from collected experiences and memories. Each painting becomes a struggle to create a unique visual language - an abstraction of color and form - and not to adhere to a literal translation of a scene or object. This lack of dependency on the literal translation is usually a liberating aspect of the work."

This statement coincided with a Diebenkorn kick I have been on lately. I have never been a huge fan of his actual paintings, but I have found that I agree a lot with aspects of what he has to say about painting. Both Diebenkorn and the statement above say it in a bit more philosophical and elegant way than I would have written, but the concepts are there.

The painting attached to the post is actually by a totally different artist John Evans, which I came across on this recent Diebenkorn voyage. He has done a series of paintings that feature what seem to be a pretty extreme overhead view, something I had started to look into, and first attempted with my painting "Farewell". His are much more successful in my opinion, and certainly more "Diebenkorn-esque", but I continue to attempt these ideas in my own way as they come along.

Southwest Art - 21 Under 31

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 90px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_kip94TFXvBs/THVeuh-0_fI/AAAAAAAAAlc/KmnjKBeG6iA/s200/Mark_Bailey_SWArthome_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5509413872646553074" />
I had the honor of being included in Southwest Art's "21 Under 31" feature this year. Quite a lot has happened over the past month, here is the latest.

I am still working towards my August show at Wells Gallery in Charleston with Philadelphia artist Evan Harrington. I have now settled on 10 pieces for the show, 8 are done, and 2 are in process. This show is meant to be work that is a bit different than what people are used to seeing from Evan and I. I will still have some of the interiors people tend to gravitate towards, but I will also have a touch of landscape work, still life, and some rather experimental stuff...but do not be afraid, it will not be TOO far removed from my previous work. I am pretty excited for this one, and the buzz is just now starting to grow as the Aug. 6th opening approaches. The painting on this post will be 1 of the 10, it has been titled "Everett" and measures 30" x 24".

In a bit of bad(?) news I have officially removed my work from the Lawrence Gallery here in Oregon. I won't go into it here, but I will say that I am sleeping just a bit better now. I am currently looking at new representation in the area, as I believe it is important to have a presence in your local art community. I will post more on that when I have figured out where to land.

Lastly, I have received word that I am one of the young artists chosen to be in the 2010 Southwest Art Magazine "21 Under 31" feature. I am not yet sure which painting will be featured, nor if I placed, but we will all know when the Sept. issue lands.

Stuart Shils

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 199px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_kip94TFXvBs/S_MTReY942I/AAAAAAAAAkc/QXmwCjzbdbI/s200/StuartShils5.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472739163121771362" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 198px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_kip94TFXvBs/S_MTQ5FEEgI/AAAAAAAAAkU/bMkiSNSa3yQ/s200/StuartShils4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472739153106178562" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 178px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_kip94TFXvBs/S_MTQuD_EHI/AAAAAAAAAkM/2B0onOfcrqE/s200/StuartShils3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472739150148866162" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 191px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_kip94TFXvBs/S_MTQFzo5AI/AAAAAAAAAkE/llJSHywOFOg/s200/StuartShils2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472739139342885890" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 172px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_kip94TFXvBs/S_MTPzeS0TI/AAAAAAAAAj8/CN_E-QW8YIY/s200/StuartShils1.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5472739134421520690" />
My favorite artist for the past couple weeks (which changes frequently), Stuart Shils. Lawrence Gallery Portland has been closed, temporarily or permanently is yet to be decided from my understanding. SO, the show has been moved to Lawrence Gallery Sheridan, which is their Oregon wine country location. The Sheridan location is a great gallery, just a bit of a different feel than the Portland Pearl District. Since it is not in Portland the opening reception does not coincide with "First Thursday". The opening reception will now be on Sunday, May 2nd from 2-4pm. It has been crazy, I have felt a bit tossed around in gallery politics, but I will be glad to have the show still go off, and I am sure it will be great! All of the paintings for the show are now posted to my website.
As the Blue Print 3 declares, "on to the next one". I am now painting towards my show in Charleston SC at Wells Gallery this August with Evan Harrington. This should be a fun show, I am looking to do a whole variety of pieces, I will keep some updates coming.

Portland Preview

Here are a handful of the interior paintings that will be a part of my Portland show in May. I appreciate all three very much, and am continually inspired by artists in all these fields. In my work the three have remained very different and separate, and over the past few years I have tried to come up with ways to meld them all, but have kind of let them remain separated. I guess they all show up in one another in subtle ways. I was cleaning up some computer files and came across these illustrations. A year or two ago I had a job to illustrate the ten plagues of Egypt. At one point I had posted a few on here. Since then I have had a few people ask me to see them in their entirety, so here they are. As a whole I am pretty happy with them given the constraints of the project, one of which was a ridiculously short timeline. Coming up with fresh and individual ideas quickly for ten very dramatic scenes is tough, especially differentiating between flies, gnats, and locusts. I took a lot of shortcuts, and definitely like a few better than others. They were intended to be in a storybook style, almost children's book illustration, with a simplified "cutout" feel.

Leyendecker Book

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_kip94TFXvBs/S2nB0DUrwqI/AAAAAAAAAjU/FvnyCrZRPw8/s200/LeyendeckerBook.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5434087525388632738" />
I wish I had more money to spend on art books, there are a lot that I pass up that I wish I could buy. This is a Leyendecker book I bought a few weeks back, really nice, great prints, high quality, some of the best reproductions of his work I have seen. If you have an extra $40 it is worth the purchase.

Painting update: I have 13 of about 20 paintings done for my May show in Portland. I sent 2 paintings down to Wells Gallery in Charleston this week. Looks like I may be having another show at Wells Gallery with Evan Harrington in Charleston late this summer, which will be awesome. Our show together last year was a lot of fun, he is a really young guy, still finishing up school, doing amazing traditional work. Also, on another front, I am trying to figure out what to paint for an invitational in Tulsa this summer called "Masters of Influence" put on by the Lovetts Gallery. They pick a famous artist each year and ask artists to create a piece based on, or inspired by, the chosen artist. This year they chose Frank Lloyd Wright, which will be fun because he is an interesting character himself, I am a fan of his architectural work, his sketches are great...there are a lot of ideas to pull from!

Mid-Struggle

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 100px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_kip94TFXvBs/SyHFoR66OpI/AAAAAAAAAjA/tbU9PeG2kZA/s200/MarkBailey_InProgress_sm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413825522871974546" />
This is a painting I am currently working on for my show in May. I am sure I will regret posting it, but that is the beauty of the delete button. At this point I think it is about 50% of the way there. Part of me wishes I had the guts to take a painting about this far, or a bit more, and leave it. It is still fun and abstract and it is more about the paint, marks, and mood than about "what it's supposed to be". Painting is fun, but at the same time it is PURE AGONY, on so many levels. Robert Henri said, "A work of art is the trace of a magnificent struggle." That is the truth, that guy knew what he was talking about.

Stephen Hayes = Awesome

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 196px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_kip94TFXvBs/SyA1TBGunBI/AAAAAAAAAiw/dnlO0yKd91U/s200/hayes_Swift.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5413385352929778706" />
I am hammering away at about a painting a week right now to get ready for a one-man show this May/June in Portland Oregon. I hope to have 25 paintings at the show with a few trickling into the galleries leading up to that. I have not decided yet when to start posting the work here or on my site, but when I get time I will try and get some up. I am looking at doing a mix of urban interior stuff, cityscape stuff, and some portrait work. I feel like the paint has been a bit more expressive and confident in the pieces thus far, I am excited to get them out there.

In the meantime, here is another guy that I like to keep an eye on, Stephen Hayes. I fell in love with his work in 2003 when I first saw it in Portland at the Elizabeth Leach Gallery. A lot of his stuff is pretty large, 5'+, this one I think is 40"x40". If I ever break some of my barriers and get past some artistic and mental blocks I hope to approach my work this fresh one day.

Banditos (2006)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 164px; height: 200px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_kip94TFXvBs/Sv9LVUJwZyI/AAAAAAAAAio/eWpRJhxEGa0/s200/MarkBailey_Bandito2_sm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404120907426850594" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 164px; height: 200px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_kip94TFXvBs/Sv9LVFOUjlI/AAAAAAAAAig/1g-FU-8jPr0/s200/MarkBailey_Bandito1_sm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5404120903419465298" />
I ran across these a couple weeks back as I was going through a bunch of my old stuff. I was pleasantly surprised, it is rare I like my work, especially OLD work. I did these back in 2006 when I was experimenting with some different supplies and approaches. These are oil and charcoal on vellum. They are at the framers right now and they may show up at one of the galleries in a couple weeks if I don't hang them on my own walls.

Green Apples

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_kip94TFXvBs/Stdqh0ELk3I/AAAAAAAAAiY/1046f8zpYZw/s200/appletree.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392896207943865202" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 192px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_kip94TFXvBs/StdqhaGM9kI/AAAAAAAAAiQ/9LV6nhK6_-4/s200/Picture+17.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392896200973022786" />
I guess I am bored, and in the mood to share today. I titled it "Concorde" and It measures 30" x 30". I like painting for friends, family, or people I know, but it is FAR more stressful than painting for myself or galleries. I guess I just want to make sure they really like it, and that it meets all their expectations. Plus I know I will see them and the painting again, so I have to try my best. This way I don't hate it in a couple years when I see it, rip it off their wall, and attempt to re-work it. I am sure most artists would understand that feeling or urge. I had a string of commissions and paintings for friends to get done, that was the last one scheduled, back to painting for the galleries.

A bit of news...it sounds like I may have a one-man show scheduled for mid 2010. I will post more on that later when I have final word.

Two and WP

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 100px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_kip94TFXvBs/So4lDhkOVKI/AAAAAAAAAgI/9ytz-cai0ZU/s200/Mark+Bailey+WP_sm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5372272147979719842" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_kip94TFXvBs/So4lDHXcy7I/AAAAAAAAAgA/E31SvH6I1aY/s200/Mark+Bailey+Two_sm.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5372272140946820018" />
Here is a clear shot of the painting "Two" from the previous post. I also added "WP" which is basically a redo of a boxcar painting I did earlier this year. Intrinsic Design wanted the original boxcar painting for their vendor space on the Street of Dreams, but it was unavailable so I painted a new one. I do not like painting the same painting twice, and have only done that one other time. This is pretty similar to the first, but I changed the graffiti, the train logo, and the birds.

Blog Resuscitation

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 130px; height: 200px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_kip94TFXvBs/SorwmeyymeI/AAAAAAAAAfo/bE-AyWukbrc/s200/Mark+Bailey+No.+2.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5371370049484528098" />
So, I am hoping to bring this thing back to life a bit. I am not sure anyone is even looking at this anymore. But if you are, awesome, thanks! I am not really sure what it will become, mostly painting work I would guess, since that is what I am working on the most. However, some drawing, design, process work, illustration, or other artist's work I appreciate, may appear now and again.

I must have an image for a post, so here is a shot of a painting I did for Intrinsic Design to display in their 937 Condo space for Portland's 2009 Street of Dreams. It may have been the most fun I have had painting in awhile. It allowed me to work larger than I have in the last couple years, and loosen up on some slightly different subject matter than most are used to seeing from me.

This painting will be hanging at the 937 Condos for the next year. If no one buys it directly from me it will make its way to one of the galleries I suppose.

I Was...

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_kip94TFXvBs/SEl-9YvCpaI/AAAAAAAAAWw/WzbYt2ki99E/s200/IWasHungry_mbailey.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5208834037107565986" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_kip94TFXvBs/SEl-9i6P8lI/AAAAAAAAAW4/ptpKJK-TVkU/s200/IWasThirsty_mbailey.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5208834039838929490" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_kip94TFXvBs/SEl-91yIkaI/AAAAAAAAAXA/Mg-LxszDvso/s200/IWasAStranger_mbailey.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5208834044905165218" />
These are the first 3 of a series of 6 photographic illustrations I am working on.
